Study MBBS in China: A Verification-First Guide

Choosing an English-taught undergraduate medical program in China requires more than finding a university name on a directory. Before applying, verify three separate questions:

1. Is the university currently permitted by China's Ministry of Education to recruit international students for the English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine program?
2. Does the university's current admissions notice match the intake, teaching language, fees, and entry requirements you were shown?
3. Will your intended licensing authority accept the degree and training path under its current rules?

Do not pay a deposit until all three checks are complete.

What the MOE List Means

China's Ministry of Education publishes academic-year notices for universities permitted to recruit international students into English-taught undergraduate clinical medicine. The 2023–2024 notice listed 44 universities and stated that institutions outside the list could not recruit students for that English-taught MBBS route during that academic year.

That notice is historical evidence for one intake, not permanent authorization. Look for the newest MOE notice and the university's current admissions page. If a newer official list is not available, ask the university for written confirmation of the current intake authority and retain the response.

A Directory Listing Is Not Accreditation

The World Directory of Medical Schools is useful for checking a school's directory record and sponsor notes. Its own disclaimer says that listing does not itself mean recognition, accreditation, or endorsement. WHO, WDOMS, WFME, FAIMER, and ECFMG do not accredit a school merely by listing it.

Use WDOMS as one checkpoint, then follow the requirements of the regulator in the country where you plan to practise. For US pathways, check the school-specific ECFMG sponsor note and current eligibility rules. For every other jurisdiction, consult the relevant national medical regulator directly.

Check the Current Program, Not Just the University

Request or verify these items on the official university site:

• Exact degree title and teaching language
• Intake year and application deadline
• Program duration and internship structure
• Curriculum and clinical placement arrangements
• Language requirements for classroom and clinical training
• Tuition, accommodation, insurance, examination, and other mandatory fees
• Refund policy and payment recipient
• Scholarship terms and renewal conditions
• Official admissions contact and application portal

An English-taught classroom program can still require Chinese study for patient communication. Ask when clinical training begins, where it occurs, and what language level is required before clinical placement.

Admission and CSCA

Universities set their own academic prerequisites, document rules, and language evidence. Do not copy an IELTS, TOEFL, age, grade, NEET, or other threshold from another university's page.

The current official CSCA subject set is Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Professional Chinese. Biology is not a current CSCA exam subject. A medical program may still require school-level biology as an academic prerequisite.

Under the general CSCA rules, Chinese Government Scholarship undergraduate applicants take Mathematics and Professional Chinese, with Physics or Chemistry added when required by the university. Other applicants should follow the exact published requirement for the program. Review the CSCA subjects and obtain written confirmation before registering.

Costs and Scholarships

Ask for a complete cost sheet covering the full program rather than relying on a first-year tuition headline. Include tuition increases, accommodation, insurance, residence permits, health checks, books, laboratory or clinical charges, travel, and living expenses.

Scholarships may be government, provincial, or university administered. Confirm whether medicine is eligible, what the award covers, how renewal works, and whether a separate university application is required. Licensing Planning

A medical degree does not automatically grant a licence in China or another country. Before enrolling:

1. Identify the regulator where you intend to practise.
2. Check the exact school, degree, graduation-year, internship, and examination rules.
3. Save the regulator's current policy and any school-specific list or sponsor note.
4. Ask how changes during a multi-year program would affect eligibility.
5. Recheck the policy before graduation and before applying for an examination.

Avoid claims such as “WHO recognized” or “globally licensed.” They do not establish eligibility for a specific licensing pathway.

1. Confirm the newest MOE academic-year permission relevant to your intake.
2. Verify the current program on the university's official admissions site.
3. Check your home or destination regulator's licensing rules.
4. Confirm academic prerequisites, language evidence, and CSCA subjects.

6. Apply only through the university or another clearly identified official channel.
7. Keep copies of notices, emails, receipts, and submitted documents.
